A lawyer charges her clients $200 for the first hour of her time and $150 for each additional hour. If the lawyer charged her new client $1,550 for a certain number of hours of her time, how much was the average (arithmetic mean) charge per hour?

(A) $155
(B) $160
(C) $164
(D) $172
(E) $185

given
200+(150)*(x-1)= 1550
solve for x= 10 hrs
200+150*9 = 1550 $
avg per hr = 155$

(A) $155
(B) $160
(C) $164
(D) $172
(E) $185

We can let n = the total number of hours of the lawyer’s service to her client and create the equation:

1550 = 200 + 150(n - 1)

1350 = 150n - 150

1500 = 150n

10 = n

Thus, the average charge per hour was 1550/10 = 155 dollars.

Answer: A

Additional Hours taken by the client is 1550 - 200/150 = 9

Thus, Total time taken by the client is 9 + 1 = 10 HOurs....

So, Average charge per hour is 1550 / 10 = 155 , Answer must be (A)
Why we have to add 1 initial hour......(x+1)?

Why we have to add 1 initial hour......(x+1)?

$1,550 comprises $200 for the first hour, and the remaining $1,350 for the additional hours at $150 per hour. Hence, the lawyer worked $1,350/150 = 9 hours beyond the first hour of work, making the total number of hours the lawyer worked equal to 9 + 1 = 10. Therefore, the total time considered is 10 hours.
