if simple present tense is used in if condition then the then condition must use either simple present tense or simple future tense

A major medical center recommends that doctors take a brief nap during long shifts, because studies show that if shift-workers lose sleep one-night and accumulated a sleep deficit on the following days, their reaction-time and judgment will be impaired.

A. accumulated a sleep deficit on the following days, their reaction-time and judgment will be impaired - Accumlated must be parallel to lose ,you accumlate a sleep deficit after loosing sleep so accumlate(simple present tense) needs to be used
B. accumulate a sleep deficit on the following days, their reaction-time and judgment will be impaired -Correct answer
C. accumulate a sleep deficit on the following days, their reaction-time and judgment was impaired - was impaired is wrong
D. accumulated a sleep deficit on the following days, it impaired their reaction-time and judgment - Repeats the tense error in Option A , pronoun "it" has no antecedent
E. accumulate a sleep deficit on the following days, this impairs one's reaction-time and judgment - the pronoun this cannot refer to the entire action of losing ones sleep and accumlating sleep deficit

D. accumulated a sleep deficit on the following days, it impaired their reaction-time and judgment
E. accumulate a sleep deficit on the following days, this impairs one's reaction-time and judgment

We look directly before the underlined portion for our first split; Accumulated/Accumulate. Lose sleep and accumulated sleep deficit is not parallel. Eliminate A/D.
Next we need a future tense for "impaired". Only answer choice that fits is "B"

A. accumulated a sleep deficit on the following days, their reaction-time and judgment will be impaired Incorrect

B. accumulate a sleep deficit on the following days, their reaction-time and judgment will be impaired Correct

C. accumulate a sleep deficit on the following days, their reaction-time and judgment was impaired Incorrect

D. accumulated a sleep deficit on the following days, it impaired their reaction-time and judgment Incorrect

E. accumulate a sleep deficit on the following days, this impairs one's reaction-time and judgment Incorrect

..........lose.............and...........accumulated ................... - not in parallel

lose in present form whereas accumulated in past form,
so eliminate A & D

.....if.........present form..........., .........present form or future form............
In C second portion of If clause is in past form, Eliminate

In E this refers to which? not clear, so Eliminate

Answer B

- Use of this and One's is not correct as Shift workers is plural.

In the Non-Underlined part "lose" is in present tense so we need present tense in underlined part to make that parallel.

We are Left with "b" and "C".

"C"- is wrong becuase all are in present no need to use "Was".
