A man is standing on the tracks near the rear end of a 400 m long train when it is just about to enter the north end of a 500 m long tunnel. If the train is moving at 25 km/hr and the man is walking in the same direction as the train at 5 km/hr, then find the distance between the man and the front end of the train when the man reaches the south end of the tunnel.

The man will have to travel 900m to get to to the south end of the tunnel, at a speed of 5km/h (or 5000m/h).
To get the time it will take him to complete his journey , we can plug in the above values into the formula for time: \(\frac{distance}{speed}\)
Time for man to cover 900m:
\(\frac{900}{5000}\)
\(\frac{9}{50}\) hours.
The distance that the train will cover in this time can be found by plugging in the speed of the train 25km/h (or 25000m/h) and the time it will travel for \(\frac{9}{50}\) hours into the formula for distance: \(Speed*Time\).
\(25 000 * \frac{9}{50}\)
\(= 500 * 9\)
\(= 4500\) meters.
One now needs to subtract 500 from 4500, as the man was standing at the back end of the train.
\(4500 - 500 = 4000\) which is \(4\)km
