Between B and E. I pick E.

If we re-word the sentence and read as:
“Jean Toomer’s Cane has been called one of the three best novels ever written by Black Americans— the others being Richard Wright’s Native Son and Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Manâ€

I'll go with "E".

However, I guess this is one of the questions where "being" is part of the correct answer (i.e if E is correct). Can someone throw more light on when to use "being"?

B it is.

E implies the tree best novels are written by just one Black American.

(E) it is ....

It just means that 'Cane' is ONE OF THE THREE BEST NOVELS written by a black american, which is not at all close to what u have quoted.

Clearly its (E). We want to say that the book is the best ever written by a certain person. In this case, a black american. What follows after the dash, should be other examples of literatures that are considered outstanding.

I followed the same principle. But does anyone what "grammer rule" is being used here.

One [singular]
of the best - prepositional phrase.
Any grammatical reason why its a black American Vs Black Americans? I suspect it has something to do with the subject one. Although dont know for sure....

I go with E for the same reason : others includes the examples of novels

E too

* Needs "a black man" to avoid any confusion between Voters and the Author
* It must be a list of novels and not people because it is the novel that has been called and not the author

I have a question:

The "comparison" rule [Book Vs Books] eliminates A, D, C.

But what is the rule that is being tested here. I recognize "Black American" Vs "Black Americans".

I chose "E" coz it sounds better than A. But what is the rule being tested here?

Just to re-iterate my reasoning ealier:

We need the name of novels to come after the dash.
B and E both have this constrcution.
I'll go with E. We need 'a black american' since we're referring to only ONE of the three best novels

All of them are written by a black american, but E doesn't not imply that they are all written by the same one. B on the other hand, sounds like the first book mentioned includes the other two.

HongHu, so you're saying its not such much a singular (a black american) Vs plural (Black americans) issue; Because the phrase "including by Richard Wright and Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison" makes it sound like these 2 book are "included" in Jean Toomer's Cane?

Pls confirm.
