A national math examination has 4 statistics problems. The distribution of the number of students who answered the questions correctly is shown in the chart. If 400 students took the exam and each question was worth 25 points, then what is the average score of the students taking the exam?

(A) 1 point
(B) 25 points
(C) 26 points
(D) 69 points
(E) 263.5 points

Someone is going to post all the math, but I have no idea why...check out the answer choices!

Each question is answered correctly by somewhere between half and most of the 400 students. They average what, 3 questions right? Sure. That's 75 points.

Look at the answer choices. Only one makes any sense at all.

Answer choice D.

Could you please explain how you found out that they averaged 3 questions?

Soz

Aha! I didn't; that's just an estimate. But that's exactly the point of my solution. We know they couldn't have solved more than 4 because that's the number of questions on the test. And every single question was solved by at least half the students, so we know the average is more than 2. I went ahead and ballparked the average as 3 (turns out that the average is 2.76, but we don't need to actually calculate that). There's only one answer choice that makes sense.

Total number of questions answered correctly by all the students = 200 + 304 + 350 +250 = 1104

Since each correct question gives 25 points, total points scored = 1104*25
Total students = 400
Thus, average score = 1104*25/400 = 1104/16 = 69

Thus, the correct answer is D.
