Find the ratio of espresso to sugar in the new drink.
Statement (1):
- 15 ounces of sugar in 35 ounces of the drink.
- The remaining 35 - 15 = 20 ounces is espresso.
- Ratio = Espresso : Sugar = 20 : 15 = 4 : 3.
- Sufficient.
Statement (2):
- 40 ounces of espresso in 70 ounces of the drink.
- The remaining 70 - 40 = 30 ounces is sugar.
- Ratio = Espresso : Sugar = 40 : 30 = 4 : 3.
- Sufficient.
Conclusion:
Each statement independently gives the same ratio.
Answer: D (Each statement alone is sufficient).

We are given that a drink only contains espresso(e) and sugar()s.
We need to find e/s
(1) There are 15 ounces of sugar in 35 ounces of the new drink.
This gives s/(e+s) = 15/35
Hence inversing the fractions, we get:
(e+s)/s = 35/15
Hence e/s+1 = 35/15
Hence e/s = 20/15
Hence sufficient
(2) There are 40 ounces of espresso in 70 ounces of the new drink.
This gives e/(e+s) = 40/70
Inversing we get:
(e+s)/e = 7/4
1+s/e= 7/4
Hence s/e =3/4
Therefore e/s = 4/3
Hence sufficient
Hence both (1) and (2) are individually sufficient.
