The key word here is than—and if you spotted it, you knew to look for a parallel comparison problem. Two actions are being compared in this sentence, so we need the words “it was” after than to make that clear. If you spotted this error, you could eliminate Choices A, B, and E. D might seem possible (and parallel in a different kind of way) until you get to the last words: 10 years in the past. This is just not the same as ago. The best answer is C.
