A painter has a white rectangular canvas that measures 1000 inches wide by 2000 inches long. She paints a 20 inch wide red strip on the inside edges of the canvas and then paints a 30 inch wide red strip that bisects the canvas into two squares (approximate). Approximately what percentage of the canvas would be white?
A. 98%
B. 93%
C. 90%
D. 89%
E. 47%
The entire canvas is 1000*2000 = 2,000,000 square inches.
The border contains four strips, each of which is 20 inches wide. Two strips are 1000 inches long, and two strips are 2000 inches long.
20*1000*2 = 40,000
20*2000*2 = 80,000
The center strip is 30 inches wide and 1000 inches long.
30*1000 = 30,000
40,000+80,000+30,000 = 150,000
Yeah, we're double-counting the four corners and the regions where the bisecting strip overlaps the edges, but those are pretty small (20*20*4 and 20*30*2) compared to the one THOUSAND by two THOUSAND inch canvas. They won't move the needle much.
So, we painted 150000/2000000 = 15/200 = 7.5/100. That leave 92.5/100 unpainted.
