A. 20
B. 32
C. 36
D. 56

He can either take east(E) or north(N)
He has to travel from A—>B & B—>C & C—>D
From A—>B, he has 1E & 1N
Number of ways of reaching B from A is same as number of ways of arranging 1E & 1N = 2!/(1!*1!) = 2 ways
From B—>C, he has 1N & 2E
Number of ways = 3!/(1!*2!)= 3 ways
From C—>D, he has 2N & 2E
Number of ways = 4!/(2!*2!) = 6 ways
Total number of ways = A—>B & B—>C & C—>D
= 2 * 3 * 6 = 36 ways
IMO Option C
