Official Explanation
Everyone on the E-commerce committee is a physician, and everyone on the Advertising committee is a researcher. However, not everyone on the E-commerce committee is allowed to serve as chair of that committee: Montgomery is a senior manager, not a director, so she can't serve as chair of any committee at all; and Raddock and Lin are members of both committees, which prohibits them from chairing the E-commerce committee. Of the members of the E-commerce committee, then, only Grassi could serve as chair of that committee without breaking any rules. That doesn't mean that Grassi will automatically chair the E-commerce committee, though, because there is a rule stating that committee members can be moved from one committee to the other. Someone who currently sits on the Advertising committee, then, could end up chairing the E-commerce committee (or vice versa).
Although neither Raddock nor Lin can serve as chair of the E-commerce committee, both are permitted to serve as chairs of the Advertising committee even though they already serve on both committees. Moreover, all members of the Advertising committee are researchers, as well as being directors, so any one of them could chair this committee.
The stimulus presents requirements for chair positions, as well as the qualifications of the committee members. The E-commerce chairperson must be a physician and a director but cannot serve on both committees, and the Advertising chairperson must be a researcher and a director and can serve on both committees. Switching committees is possible, but those who serve on both committees cannot leave either committee.
For column 1, we need someone who can fulfill all stipulations for chairing both committees. The chair of the E-commerce committee needs to be a physician (that rules out Scully) and may not serve on both committees (that rules out Raddock and Lin). The chair of the Advertising committee must be a researcher (that rules out Grassi). Both chairs must be directors, which rules out Montgomery. The only choice we have left is Abbara, who only serves on one committee and who is both a physician and a researcher. Abbara, then, is our answer for column 1.
One consistent requirement for both chairs is being a director. Montgomery is not a director, so she cannot serve as chair of either committee, making her the correct choice for column 2.
The correct answers are Jeannette Abbara for either committee and Joanne Montgomery for neither committee.
