A pilotless cargo carrier brings water, air and dry food to a space station. A third of the cargo's weight is water and the ratio, by weight, of air to dry food is 2:3. If the cargo contains 1,800 pounds of water, how many pounds of air does it contain?

Given :
Let C = cargo's weight
A) water = 1/3C
B) ratio of air:dry food = 2:3 by weight
C) water = 1800 pounds

to find Air's weight.

1/3C = 1800
C = 5400

Weight air and dry food = 5400 - 1800 = 3600
Now 3600 = 5 unit from B)
1 unit = 720

air is 2 units. So 2*720 = 1440

Therefore IMO option C

Given weight of water = 1800 pounds and its third of cargo's weight therefore cargo's weight = 3 * 1800 = 5400 pounds.

So weight of air and dry food combined = cargo's weight - water's weight = 5400 - 1800 = 3600 pounds.

Of this weight, air's weight is given by
= \(\frac{2}{(2+3)} * 3600\)

= 1440 pounds

Hence answer is C.

A third of the cargo's weight is water = 1,800
Total weight =1,800*3 = 5,400

Weight of air and dry food = 5,400 - 1,800 = 3,600
Ratio of weight of air to dry food 2:3

Pounds of air = 2/5 * 3,600
1,440
Answer is C
