Given: A plane travels certain distance d in time t hours.

Asked: If the ratio of the speed of the plane if it had taken half an hour less to cover d to the speed of the plane if it had taken half an hour more to cover d is 5:3, what is the value of t (in hours)?

Speed of the plan s = d/t

The ratio of the speed of the plane if it had taken half an hour less to cover d to the speed of the plane if it had taken half an hour more to cover d is 5:3.

{d/(t-.5)}/{d/(t+.5)} = 5/3
(t+.5)/(t-.5) = 5/3
t = 2 hours
