A pyramid made of rectangular prisms has layers each half the width of the layer beneath it. The base is a square that is 8 meters wide. Each level is a meter high. If the outside of the pyramid was being painted (not including the bottom), what would the surface area be of the painted part?
A. 84 m^2
B. 120 m^2
C. 208 m^2
D. 248 m^2
E. 268 m^2
The total painted area = Area of the sides of the 3 prisms + Area of the uncovered surfaces of the 3 prisms.
The side of the largest prism are each 8 * 1 = 8. Therefore the 4 sides have area = 8 * 4 = 32
The width of the second largest prism = 4, and each side has an area of 4 * 1 = 4. Therefore the 4 sides have area = 4 * 4 = 16
The width of the smallest prism = 2, and each side has an area of 2 * 1 = 2. Therefore the 4 sides have area = 2 * 4 = 8
The uncovered area of the top of the largest prism = Top Area of the Largest prism - Top Area of the second largest prism = 64 - 16 = 48
The uncovered area of the top of the second largest prism = Top Area of the second largest prism - Top Area of the smallest prism = 16 - 4 = 12
Top area of the smallest prism = 4
Total Painted area = 32 + 16 + 8 + 48 + 12 + 4 = 120 m^2.
