I'm not saying that it's impossible to get into H or S or W (or any other top B-school) if you didn't attend a top undergrad. Far from it, there are great counter-examples in this discussion thread alone. I'm just saying that attending a top undergrad will on the whole make the experience easier.

Many of my recent discoveries were from the resumes of certain career oriented clubs and internships, and many were from top schools, a few from the 'lower' top 50 grouping, and a handful from schools I never heard of.

I guess I wasn't clear enough in my statement. I mean the % admission for those UG school for HS seniors entering, not alumni moving on to b-school. Seeing how selective the UG school is for admissions to begin with would give an indication as to what should be expected of those graduating from that school. If you attend UG at a school that lets in 10% of those that apply, you've obviously already differentiated yourself from your peers. Doing so again to get into b-school will not be that different as you're probably already a very impressive person.

I still think the adcoms strive for diversity and much of that diversity comes from people from different UG institutions.

Anyone else getting the feeling we all agree but want to say it in our own certain way? ;-)

My point is that I think which UG has less to do with admission to b-school than how well you do while there. I would like to see the % admission for some of those top UG school. This would help the argument made by another poster that those top schools are going to be more selective to begin with, so the pool of students will be more talented and more likely of success from the beginning.
First, I certainly agree with most of what you've said. Adcoms are definitely looking at what you've done no matter where you've gone for undergrad. And success doesn't derive solely from the name of the institution on your diploma.

With respect to admission rates from each undergrad school... that specific information can't be found, as B-schools don't release it. Looking at the number of students from each undergrad at a given school does give a reasonable proxy. I'm not about to go through the facebook groups for H, S, and W. I can tell you, though, that a quick review of the Stanford group shows a _lot_ of "alum" listings for Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Penn, and MIT among others. I would assume the same representation could be found at HBS and Wharton. Either students from these undergrads get into B-school at a relatively high rate, or a substantially higher number apply to B-school in the first place. I don't think the latter reason can account for the entire discrepancy.

I'm not saying that it's impossible to get into H or S or W (or any other top B-school) if you didn't attend a top undergrad. Far from it, there are great counter-examples in this discussion thread alone. I'm just saying that attending a top undergrad will on the whole make the experience easier.

I disagree  Well, not entirely . . .

But, I think the rest of you are agreeing in your own way.

kind of wish I knew I wanted to attend a top b-school when I was 16. Would have worked as hard for the SAT as I did for the GMAT:)

In HS I didn't even know what an ivy league was (I had never heard of it before my 1st year in college) :) ... I didn't know which school was good which was not, so I ended up at a school that gave me the most money  .... so I sold my soul to the devil for money

I went where they let me play golf for them!! If the ability to golf is necessary for any post-mba job, i'm well qualified.

Not sure how good you are, but being a good golfer is an asset. Guaranteed. I've seen handicaps on resumes.

I went to the school where my parents met and graduated from and where my only sibling (older) graduated from. I kind of wish I ended the "tradition" now that I look back on it. No way am I letting my kids continue it! :P

I'm about an 8 handicapper. So once I'm in, I should put that on my resume?

Easier said than done, but if you can get that down a wee bit, I'd say yes. If you've competed and done well in tournaments, I'd put that down as well.

I saw a resume of one girl interning at BB. She was a scratch golfer and placed 1st in a few local tournaments. Oh, she's also from top 5 undergrad too. That prob didn't hurt.

kidderek,

Where did you go to undergrad?

If you're in b-school now, what school are you attending? I didn't see that in your profile.

I would have tried my darnedest to get into an ivy league school.

I was thinking about this subject this morning. There are, what, around 10,000 incoming freshmen students into top 10 schools (Ivy + Stanford + MIT) every year. I haven't done the math to add up the exact number, but I would guess 10,000 is in the ballpark. If that's true, I don't see why anyone with at least average intellect could not gain admittance to one of those schools if they planned properly and executed consistently over an extended period of time. I suppose that sounds controversial, but it seems clear to me that getting into an UE undergrad is as much about focused, consistent preparation and having the right guiding influences in your life as it is about sheer genius / athletic talent.

It's sad that at that point in our life, we think we know everything, and we haven't even got a clue. Well, the most of us.

Without going into specifics, my ug is probably better known for a sport, and as of late we stink at that sport as well. hahaha

I only applied to Johnson School/Cornell (half-assed effort at that) and was summarily d w/o i. No real surprise there. Just going through my head whether this bschool thing is worth the effort -- not just getting in, but the recruiting process, job track, exit opportunities etc.

I'll have a more thorough profile up once this whole thing is over.
