My point is that I think which UG has less to do with admission to b-school than how well you do while there. I would like to see the % admission for some of those top UG school. This would help the argument made by another poster that those top schools are going to be more selective to begin with, so the pool of students will be more talented and more likely of success from the beginning.
First, I certainly agree with most of what you've said. Adcoms are definitely looking at what you've done no matter where you've gone for undergrad. And success doesn't derive solely from the name of the institution on your diploma.
With respect to admission rates from each undergrad school... that specific information can't be found, as B-schools don't release it. Looking at the number of students from each undergrad at a given school does give a reasonable proxy. I'm not about to go through the facebook groups for H, S, and W. I can tell you, though, that a quick review of the Stanford group shows a _lot_ of "alum" listings for Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Penn, and MIT among others. I would assume the same representation could be found at HBS and Wharton. Either students from these undergrads get into B-school at a relatively high rate, or a substantially higher number apply to B-school in the first place. I don't think the latter reason can account for the entire discrepancy.
I'm not saying that it's impossible to get into H or S or W (or any other top B-school) if you didn't attend a top undergrad. Far from it, there are great counter-examples in this discussion thread alone. I'm just saying that attending a top undergrad will on the whole make the experience easier.
