A refrigerator holds a number of apples, bananas, carrots and dates. If the ratio of apples to bananas is 2 to 5 and the ratio of carrots to dates is 3 to 7, then what is the ratio of apples to dates?

(1) The ratio of bananas to carrots is 50 to 21

(2) The total number of apples, bananas, carrots and dates is 280

Solution:
(1) a:b = 2:5 // c:d = 3:7 // b:c = 50:21 --> a:b:c:d = 20:50:21:49 --> apples to dates = 20:49 -- Sufficient

(2) 7x +10y = 280 -- can not be solved further -- not-sufficient

C:D::3:7

(1) B:C::50:21

A:B:C:D::20:50:21:49
A:D::20:49
Sufficient

A+B+C+D = 280
A, B, C, D can be 20, 50, 63, 147 or 40, 100, 42, 98 or 60, 150, 21, 49
Not sufficient
