A retailer is considering getting his store painted. The dimensions of his store are 40 feet by 15 feet by 60 feet, 15 feet being the height of his store. He finds that the ceiling is in good state and need not be re-painted. However, the ceiling is painted with a costly oil paint and avoiding painting the ceiling would mean painting the four walls with the same, costly paint as he intends to keep the
texture on all five surfaces the same. Alternately, he can get all the five surfaces painted a fresh by a cheaper distemper. The overall cost for using oil paint turns out to be 50 cents per square feet and the same for distemper turns out to be 30 cents.

In the table, select the values that represent the total cost to the retailer for getting his store painted for each of the two alternatives that he is considering. Make only two selections, one in each column.

Option 1: Avoiding painting the ceiling, but using  costly oil paint (50¢/sq ft)  on  four walls only 
We need to calculate the  area of the four walls :
 
 Two walls of  60 ft (L) × 15 ft (H)  → 2 × (60 × 15) =  1800 sq ft  
 Two walls of  40 ft (W) × 15 ft (H)  → 2 × (40 × 15) =  1200 sq ft  
  Total area = 1800 + 1200 = 3000 sq ft   
 Cost = 3000 sq ft × $0.50 = $1500

Option 2: Paint  all five surfaces  (4 walls + ceiling) with  cheaper distemper (30¢/sq ft) 
We already calculated the  4 walls = 3000 sq ft 
Now add the  ceiling :
 
 Ceiling area =  Length × Width = 60 × 40 = 2400 sq ft   
 Total area = 3000 + 2400 = 5400 sq ft
