1. We need to find the cost of using oil paint on the 4 side walls and the cost of using distemper on the 4 side walls and ceiling.

2. Let's draw how the two painting methods would look like.

3. The total area of method 1 is equal to \(2 * 15 * 40 + 2 * 15 * 60 = 3000\) square feet. The total area of method 2 is equal to \(2 * 15 * 40 + 2 * 15 * 60 + 40 * 60 = 5400\) square feet.

4. Now we can calculate the costs:

  • Method 1 cost = $\(0.5 * 3000\) = $1500
  • Method 2 cost = $\(0.3 * 5400\) = $1620

5. So, our answer is: Avoiding painting the ceiling and using oil paint - $1500; Using distemper for all surfaces - $1620.

Dimensions of the store:
  • Length (L): 60 feet
  • Width (W): 40 feet
  • Height (H): 15 feet

Option 1: Avoiding painting the ceiling, but using costly oil paint (50¢/sq ft) on four walls only
We need to calculate the area of the four walls:
  • Two walls of 60 ft (L) × 15 ft (H) → 2 × (60 × 15) = 1800 sq ft
  • Two walls of 40 ft (W) × 15 ft (H) → 2 × (40 × 15) = 1200 sq ft
  • Total area = 1800 + 1200 = 3000 sq ft
Cost = 3000 sq ft × $0.50 = $1500


Option 2: Paint all five surfaces (4 walls + ceiling) with cheaper distemper (30¢/sq ft)
We already calculated the 4 walls = 3000 sq ft
Now add the ceiling:
  • Ceiling area = Length × Width = 60 × 40 = 2400 sq ft
Total area = 3000 + 2400 = 5400 sq ft
Cost = 5400 sq ft × $0.30 = $1620


✅ Correct answers:
  • Avoiding painting the ceiling and using oil paint: $1500
  • Using distemper for all surfaces: $1620
