A speedboat manufacturer has a variable cost-to-profit ratio based on the number of units sold. If the company sold 2,500 boats last fiscal year, and no other products, were its profits greater than $5,000,000?
(1) Its profits from the first 2,000 boats sold were greater than $4,000,000
(2) Its profits from each of the last 500 boats sold were less than $2,500

Let’s say the profit for the first 2000 boats is A , for the last 500 is B
1) not sufficient A> 4 million ,but we don’t know anything about B If A=4.2 B=1 , A+B>5 . If A=4.2 , B=0.5 ,A+B = 4.7 < 5
2) same idea , not sufficient
1)+2) Since A>4 ... if B>= 1 ..then A+B> 5 ....but B >1 when unit price > 2000 ; B<1 when unit price <2000....since unit price < 2500..either result is possible
The question states that if the company sold 2,500 boats, were its profits greater than $5,000,000
Statement-1 states that Profits from the first 2,000 boats sold were greater than $4,000,000.
It can be 5,000,000 or 6,000,000 too. Also no information is given on 500 boats from total of 2500 boats. Hence Insufficient. Cancel AD.
Statement-2 states that Its profits from each of the last 500 boats sold were less than $2,500
But no information is given on 2000 boats sold. Cancel B
Taking statement-1 and statement-2 together. We still have the same problem that 2,000 boats sold can be at 4,000,001 or at 6,000,000, Hence insufficient. Cancel C.
Right Option is E
