A,B,C are out..
here it means derivative/substance is cultivated.. thats wrong..
MP is cultivated.
D --> that refers to what????? unclear.

E is the best. All other options have modifier problems.

yes E. Other options distorts the meaning. It is Periwinkle that is cultivated and not the derivative.

Agree with E.
Thats the reasoning why it is E.

Thank you all. OA is E

I knew the change of meaning. But, I purposely selected C because

1)I was not sure 'what' is cultivated in China. Infact, there are no pointers that can help you decide that only periwinkle can be cultivated not the derivative.
2) Also because there is no meaning change between the original sentence and C

when we say X is derived from Y, then it means Y is cultivated.
if X is cultivated, then we won't say X is derived from Y or Z.

So I also agree with E.

No here the concern is not the knowledge of wht is cultivated in China.but a derivative (a by product) cannot be cultivated - that is the point

i understand that every one feels that a substance can not be cultivated, but doesnt that depend on what the substance is? there are many thinks that can be cultivated besides plants. Suppose the substance is globs of celluar material that can be cultivated? I think that this questions leaves too much to be inferred

Yeah, you are right. We can never be sure. We can only hope that such questions don't screw up your score on the actual GMAT
