D. $1.74
E. $3.14

First 3 minutes = 50 cents
After that, every 5 minutes until 15 minutes = 20 cents
After that, per minute = 2 cents
Jack's call = 50 minutes = (3 + 15 + 32) minutes
Cost = [50 + 3(20) + 32(2)] cents = 50 + 60 + 64 = 174 cents = $1.74

Therefore, answer is D.

Jack's phone call = 50 minutes

3 minutes= +50 cents
(+3 mins)

5+5+5 mins= +20¢ +20¢ +20¢= +60¢
(+15 mins)
(+3 +15 = +18 mins used)

Remaining minutes:
(50 total - 18 used) = 32 mins left

32 minutes at 2 cents per minute =
(2¢)(32) = +64 cents

+50 cents
+60 cents
+64 cents
174 cents

174 cents = $1.74

For the first 3 minutes, the cost of the call is 50 cents. For the next 15 minutes, the cost is 20 x (15/5) = 20 x 3 = 60 cents. For the last 50 - 3 - 15 = 32 minutes, the cost is 2 x 62 = 64 cents. Thus, the total cost of the 50-minute call is:

50 + 60 + 64 = 174 cents = $1.74

Answer: D
