A test consists of two sections. The first section contains 40 questions and the second section contains 80 questions. If a student correctly answered 70 percent of all the questions in the test and correctly answered 60 percent of the questions in the second section, what percent of the questions did the student correctly answer in the first section?

A. 65%
B. 70%
C. 75%
D. 80%
E. 90%

Total questions = 120
Student answered 70% correct (Section A & B) = 70/100*120 = 84 questions

2nd section he answered 60% correct = 60/100*80 = 48
--> correct answers from 1st section = 84 - 48 = 36 (out of 40)

So, % of correct questions = 36/40*100 = 90 %

IMO Option E

Pls Hit kudos if you like the solution

B. 70%
C. 75%
D. 80%
E. 90%

The test has 120 questions, and so the student correctly answered 0.7 x 120 = 84 questions. On section 2, the student correctly answered 0.6 x 80 = 48 questions. Letting n = the percent of the 40 questions the student answered correctly on the first section 1, we can create the equation:

40 x (n/100) + 48 = 84

4n/10 + 48 = 84

4n/10 = 36

4n = 360

n = 90
