A total of 22 men and 26 women were at a party, and the average (arithmetic mean) age of all of the adults at the party was exactly 35 years. If the average age of the men was exactly 38 years, which of the following was closest to the average age, in years, of the women?

(A) 31
(B) 31.5
(C) 32
(D) 32.5

\(­(22+26)35 = 22*38 + 26w\)

So, \(­1680 = 836 + 26w\)

Or, \(­844 = 26w\)

Or, \(w ≅ 32.5\)­­, Answer must be (D)

The number line approach gets a little messy here bc of the numbers they chose, but I think it's better than doing the long math out:

what is the method of choosing between these to other than doing 33/13 manually.

Sum of ages (M+W) = 48*35 = 1680
Sum of ages (M) = 22*35 = 836
Sum of ages (W) = 1680-836 = 844

Avg age (W) = 844/26 =~32.46

There are many approaches when it comes to weighted averages....but in this point, the cleanest (Cleanest doesn't always means fastest, here I mean which will give us confidence in our answer) way to do is Simply..... 38 X 22 + 26w = 35 (22 +26)..... Solve for w...

But if you are short on time..then...if the number of both men and women were equal then women's age would have been at the same distance from 35 than the men's age....so 35-3..- 32..but since..no of women is more it should be more than 32....So A B C are out...and you are left with D and E if you are short on time and have to guess an answer without solving.....
