length of train = x
and speed of train =y
we are given
x/y-4.5=8.4 and x/y-5.4= 8.5
solve for y= 81 km/hr

A train overtakes two people walking along a railway track. The two people are walking in the same direction as the train at the rates of 4.5 km/hr and 5.4 km/hr respectvely. The train takes 8.4 seconds and 8.5 seconds respectively to overtake them. What is the speed of the train?

(A) 66 km/hr

(B) 72 km/hr

(C) 78 km/hr

(D) 81 km/hr

(E) 96 km/hr

(B) 72 km/hr

(C) 78 km/hr

(D) 81 km/hr

(E) 96 km/hr

Set the train's speed as x km/h. The train is faster than the first person by \((x-4.5)\) km/h, and the train needs 8.4s to overtake, therefore the train's length is \((x - 4.5)*8.4\). Similarly, for the second person, the speed of the train is faster by \((x - 5.4)\) km/h so it takes longer to overtake him, and the train's length is \(8.5(x - 5.4)\). We have the train's length in two different expressions so we can set them equal to each other and solve for x.

\(8.5(x - 5.4) = 8.4(x - 4.5)\)

\(0.1x = 8.5*5.4 - 8.4*4.5 = (8.4*5.4 + 0.1*5.4) - 8.4*4.5 = 8.4*(5.4 - 4.5) + 0.1*5.4 = 8.4*0.9 + 0.1*5.4\)

\(x = 8.4*9 + 5.4 = 72 + 3.6 + 5.4 = 81.\)

The train covers a distance equal to its length to overtake a person. Time taken to overtake is calculated from the time the front of the train is in line with the person till the time the end of the train is in line with the person. So distance covered in both cases is the same.

Since distance = speed * time,

(S - 4.5) * 8.4/3600 = (S - 5.4) * 8.5/3600

5.4*8.5 - 4.5*8.4 = 0.1*S

S = 81

Am i the only one who feels the question is poorly written? It could also be understood as the train initially being behind the 2 persons (not necessarily in line with each of them) where it still has some distance to cover to line up? It is not very obvious from the question that overtaking means the time it takes from the front of the train to end of the train passing each person?
