A train traveling at a speed of 81 mph overtakes a freight train traveling at a speed of 45 mph in 3 minutes. If the length of the train is 1100 meters, what is the length of the freight train?

A. 1100
B. 1440
C. 1780
D. 1880
E. 2880

Breaking Down the Info:

The train is faster by \(81 - 45 = 36\) mph, so the distance created by traveling at that speed for 3 min is \(36 \text{ mph} * \frac{1}{20} \text{ hours} = 1.8 \text{ miles} = 1.8 \text{ miles} * \frac{1600 \text{ m} }{ 1 \text{ mile}} = 2880 \text{ m}\).

This would be the entire overtake length, which is the length of both trains added up. Then subtract 1100 meters to get the faster train is 1780 meters long,

Answer: C

Hi JerryAtDreamScore ! Quick question, does this imply that we are meant to know how to convert 1 mile in meters ? And vice-versa

Thank you for your answer :)
