Re: A train travels 60 miles per hour for 3 hours and then 45 miles per ho [#permalink]
60m/hr was done is 60% of whole time (5-hour period).
And 45m/hr was done in 40% of whole time.

0.6*(60) + 0.4(45) = 36+18 = 54

A train travels 60 miles per hour for 3 hours and then 45 miles per hour for 2 hours. What is the train's average speed in miles per hour during the 5-hour period?

A. 55
B. 54
C. 52 1/2
D. 51
E. 50

We can use the formula:

average rate = (total distance)/(total time)

The total distance is 3 x 60 + 2 x 45 = 180 + 90 = 270 miles,

Thus, the average rate is:

270/5 = 54 mph
