SOLUTION

A train travels from New York to Chicago, a distance of approximately 840 miles, at an average rate of 60 miles per hour and arrives in Chicago at 6:00 in evening, Chicago time. At what hour in the morning, New York time, did the train depart for Chicago? (Note : Chicago time is one hour earlier than New York time)

(A) 4:00
(B) 5:00
(C) 6:00
(D) 7:00
(E) 8:00

6:00 in evening in Chicago = 7:00 in evening in New York. So, the train was in Chicago 7:00 in the evening, New York time.

The trip took T=D/R=840/60=14 hours. Therefore, the train depart from New York at 7:00 - 14 hours = 5:00 in the morning, New York time.

Answer: B.

Time taken = 840/60 hours = 14 hours.

From NYC's point of view, the train reached at 7:00 in the evening so it must have started at 5:00 in the morning.

Time taken = 14 Hrs

Reached Chicago at 0600 Evening, means departed NewYork 0400Hrs (Chicago time)

Chicago time is one hour earlier than New York, means New York time is one hour ahead

So it departed NY at 0500Hrs = Answer = B

From NY to C:
Time taken according to Chicago time => 840/60 = 14 hour journey
If say train reaches on Monday at 6 PM (Chicago time)
it must have started at 4 AM on Monday (14 hour journey)
This is accord to Chicago time.
Now Chicago = Newyork time -1
Thus New York time = 4 AM + 1 = 5 AM

1. Time taken = 840/60=14 hrs
2. when train arrives at Chicago, Chicago time is 6 pm.
3. New York time then is 7 pm
3. 14 hrs before that time is the departure time at New York which is 5 in the morning in New York.

Answer: B.

HI

Doesn't it sounds like one hour earlier in chicago means while 6:00 pm in chicago 5:00 pm in new york?

Since time = distance/rate, it takes the train 840/60 = 14 hours to get to Chicago from New York.

Since Chicago time is one hour earlier than New York time, when the train arrive in Chicago at 6 pm, New York time is 7 pm. Therefore, the train must have departed from New York at

7 pm - 14 hours = 7 pm - 7 hours - 7 hours = 12 pm - 7 hours = 5 am

Answer: B
