A truck is carrying 150 pallets of steel ingots and 100 pallets of copper ingots, weighing a total of 10,000 pounds. What is the average (arithmetic mean) weight of a pallet of copper ingots?

(1) The average weight of a pallet of steel ingots is 20 pounds.
(2) The weight of a pallet of copper ingots varies from 50 to 100 pounds.

Explanation:

Let the average weight of a pallet of steel ingot be S.
Let the average weight of a pallet of copper ingot be C.
Since 150 pallets of steel ingots and 100 pallets of copper ingots weigh 10,000 pounds: 150S + 100C = 10000 (Equation I)
We need to find whether the value of C can be determined.

Statement (1)

S = 20 (Equation II)

From Equation I and Equation II, we have 2 equations with 2 unknown variables, which can be solved to determine the exact value of C. Hence, Statement (1) is sufficient.

Statement (2)

50 ≤ C ≤ 100

Since there are multiple values of C from 50 to 100 that satisfy Equation I, it is NOT possible to determine the exact value of C. Hence, Statement (2) is insufficient.

A is the correct answer choice.
