A yacht club conducts a training race every Friday and Sunday during the summer months weather permitting. If the club was able to conduct a race every Friday and Sunday in the month of July, how many races were there that month?
(1) There were five Tuesdays in the month.
(2) The twenty-fifth of July was a Thursday.
Are You Up For the Challenge: 700 Level QuestionsJuly has \(31 \) days , hence \(28+3\) , hence it has \(4\) weeks and \(3\) extra days
(1) There were five Tuesdays in the month.
This is only possible if one of the extra days were a Tue. So we could have
Sun, Mon, Tue (i)
Mon, Tue ,Wed, (ii)
Tue , Wed ,Thu (iii)
If (i) were true we have an extra Sunday hence there will be ONE extra race .
If (ii) and (iii) were true , we could not have an extra race.
Since we are getting two different number of races. This is
INSUFF.(2) The twenty-fifth of July was a Thursday.
We can easily calculate that \(29\)th, \(30\)th and \(31\)th days of July were Mon, Tue and Wed.
Hence the \(28\)th day was a Sunday.
Which means there were \(4\) whole weeks each beginning with Mon and ending on a Sun, excluding the \(3 \) extra days
Hence there were four Fridays and four Sundays and a total of \(8\) races.
