abreviations

Question

In my first essay, I use the name of my company and then refer to it in acronyms.

Does this carry over to the other essays or do I have to again name the company?

As long as you have linked the abbreviation and its expansion clearly  before  using just the abbreviation, I think you should be ok.

i use it sparingly, because all my reviewers have been teasing me about using acronyms. I use acronyms for long program names. Otherwise, I use "the program" or "the company".

My work is king of the abreviations...its like talking in code all day. I have to be very careful when writing that I dont start slipping three letters in without explaining. I only use them in a few essays and very rarely...I definitely go far more generic so that they are easily understandable.

Same in Telecom. Every standard, every technology, every principle and every darn product is abbreviated. :evil:

I gave the kid I mentor at work a list of our abreviations and what they mean. It was like pages and pages long, I think there were like 350+ and it was all off the top of my head. I am sure there are more I couldnt think of too...it is pretty crazy at times.

Its funny to watch new people come in and see their reaction as they listen in on people talking. They have that glazed over look like being in another coutry trying to figure out what the people are saying about the obnoxious americans.

my favorite part is when you have acronyms that mean different things... ABM can mean 5 different things on 5 different programs just at my site alone!

is VoIP considered a common knowledge abbreviation? i think i write Voice-over-IP in one essay, but dont spell out IP ever.

The only things I abreviate without spelling out are common terms for b-schools. I used GSB for chicago in places. I used NGOs in one since it was all over Kellogg's website without explanation, so I didnt feel the need to write out what the letters mean.

Unless the abbreviation is as common as NGO or as obvious as GSB (In case of Chicago), I expand the abbreviation when it is first used. However, I prefer to stay away from abbreviations in general.

I would not use VoIP or, for that matter, Voice-over-IP in my essays without explaining what this is. A liberal arts person would not know what IP or VoIP means. If there was no way for you to stay away from this term, then maybe you could have used the terms "Internet Telephony" or "Voice over Internet" instead?

i used "commercial off-the-shelf" technology (you techies should know what I mean) and one of my non-techie readers said, "that sounds contradictory". I'm not even sure what she meant, but I took it out just in case.
