According to entomologists, single locusts are quiet creatures, but when locusts are
placed with others of their species,
they become excited, change color, vibrate, and even
hum.

A. when locusts are placed with others of their species,
B. when placing them with others of their species, then
C. locusts, when placed with others of their species,
D. placing them with others of their species,
E. placed with others of their species, then

IMO A.

It was b/w A and C.

C. "when placed with others of their species" is a modifier - remove this and now the sentence becomes

"According to entomologists, single locusts are quiet creatures, but locusts,.....,they become excited, change color, vibrate, and even hum.
Hence you cannot have locusts and they together.

My answer is A
B. when placing them with others of their species, then awkward construction
C. locusts, when placed with others of their species, they... wrong
D. placing them with others of their species, they... dangling modifier
E. placed with others of their species, then they.... awkward construction

Therefore, A is the best choice
