Hello!
First time posting. So I am hoping to go into an Accounting PhD program next year (so applying this December) and wanted some advice.
Background:
Bachelors of Accounting & Economics: 3.08 GPA at a decent state school. I know it's bad. I was very heavily involved in student orgs and didn't care about GPA, and I knew I wouldn't have a problem getting a great job without a high GPA so didn't bother. Of course this is now biting me in the ass for PhD apps. I did still learn a lot (evidenced by ETS MFT below) and built up a lot of non-academic skills that got me the below job. Decent quant background from econ.
Job: By the time of applying I will have worked 1.5 years in Big4 Consulting
ETS Major Field Test for Bachelor's of Business: 98th Percentile in the country. Professor said I was the highest score of my class of 300~. Figure this might help the GPA. Goes on resume and maybe SOP as a way to prop up GPA. No preparation at all for this.
GMAT: Haven't taken yet, studying now. I know I need to break 700 with a strong quant showing.
Rec Letters: Wasn't super close with some of my profs, but 1 solid accounting letter I can get, 1 solid econ letter, and I can surely get a glowing rec from the Dean of the college for my work with him.
SOP: I can write the **** out of a statement of purpose. Should shine here.
Research interests: I work in Federal consulting so governmental accounting as well as managerial. No audit or tax.
First: Am I even in the ballpark? I see so many people on here asking about PhD Accounting that all seem waaaay better than me. So I am concerned. For reference, I am not aiming for a top school, and my main goal is just to at least go to a decently ranked research school, so after graduating I can teach at a research school if I end up wanting that (prob not I love teaching). And I also will probably want to go into higher ed admin later in career as a Dean if possible.
Second: Is there any way to get involved in research at this point? I have a full year before I apply, but obviously not being in school right now makes this difficult. Should I reach out to my old professors? What can I possibly do to show some skills here? I'm willing to put in the work to make this happen if possible.
Thanks everyone. Back to studying for the GMAT while I await your responses!
