Hi,
I have an M.S. in Accounting, an MBA with a concentration in Management Information Systems (MIS) and work experience in both Accounting and MIS/IT domains. 3.5 undergrad gpa, 3.9 grad. Had a 740 GMAT, but it's expired. I didn't do a lot of prep but was teaching SAT classes at the time, so it might have been a fluke. Time will tell how I score 10 years later...those multiple-choice muscles have atrophied.
I've always wanted to teach business at a university but am just now getting to the point where I'm interested in research. This might sound convoluted, but I'd rather teach Accounting yet find the MIS research topics more interesting, so I'm trying to choose a field.
1. Initial research leads me to believe that both the pay and number of open faculty positions is generally much better in Accounting than MIS/Information Systems. Is that true?
2. Are admissions more competitive for one or the other?
My program search is confined to the Los Angeles/Orange County/San Diego areas.
Thanks!
Mike
Hi Mike!
In your Grad or otherwise, have you done courses such as Probability theory, statistics theory, linear algebra, econometrics, research-based courses, and accounting/finance/ economics seminars, etc? How are your programming skills? Have you worked on SAS/STATA/LATEX/PYTHON etc?
You may also explore short term RA opportunities for getting LORS from Professors who are publishing in top journals.
Yes, I have heard that accounting professors are in demand. You have to convince the admissions committee as to why do you want to do a Ph.D. Do you have any experience with accounting research?
Try to get a 740+ in GMAT. Your Grad GPA is good. Yes, Admissions have become competitive. However, your profile is good.
Feel free to seek further clarification.
All the best!
