E for me too..

"In addition to" is the correct phrase to be used.

A, B and C are out for the same reason stated above.

D is out on account of the usage of "were" - "the increase were requested" is incorrect

E is correct as it gets rid of the were and gets everything else right!

Narrow Choices : D /E

D has "were" which is incorrect.

(E) In addition to the increase in hourly wages requested last July, the employees of the railroad are now seeking an expanded program of retirement benefits.

Although "the employees of the railroad" bothers me...

Used identical logic. Probably would have chosen (D) on test day even though I know it is wrong. Either way, this one is going to the error log.

E

A,B C are changing the meaning of sentence.

D is using "were"

Only E survives.

Good One. Picking E.

In D, "were" should have been "was"

In addition to the increase in hourly wages that was requested last July, the railroad employees are now seeking an expanded program of retirement benefits.

C and D are out because of SVA: increase WAS requested... not the wages

A and B seem to say the employees were added to the increase... wrong modifier or comparison?

E survives

Clear winner E.

Maintains the S-V agreement. Increase is singular, hence was.

Caught between D and E.

D has SV agreement error.

So E is the winner

Between D & E

D CHANGES THE MEANING -- increase in " hourly wages that were requested last july"
----> means -- Increase in only " hourly wages that were requested last july" not june,... future months ... only last july..

E correct answer

It changes the meaning of orginal sentence.

"retirement benefits" added to "the increase in hourly wages was requested in last july" ----> Is this sounds logical????

Very good question fresinha12. Even I had the same question. The answer is simple. In GMAT, "employees of Railroad" is much more preferred than "Railroad employees".
I did not understand the SV issue

E. for DIRECT & ACTIVE.

D/C are in passive.
A/B are awakward and wordy.
