, thanks for reaching out. I do see your concern and think that without any explanation, schools might view the title change as being less typical. But I think with some smart formatting on your resume, and an explanation from one of your recommender writers, you can mitigate that concern. Otherwise, I like that the new position gives you exposure to another market, and a new practice area too.
Hi,
I've just finished my first year as an analyst at a global consulting firm in the U.S. and my employer has given me an offer for another position in a different department in their Singapore office.
A little bit about me: I did my undergrad in the states and have been working for the current company for about a year since graduating from college. But I didn't won the work visa lottery this year (I'm not a U.S. citizen.) and my employer is trying to transfer me to their Singapore office. But the problem is that my current title in the U.S. office is "Consultant" and my title in the Singapore office will be "Associate". Even though I will be working for the same company, they have a slightly different organization structure across countries.
For example, it goes like "Consultant" - "Senior Consultant" - Manager", etc. in North America while it is "Associate" - "Consultant" - Senior Consultant" -"Manager" etc in the APAC region. So the entry level position in the U.S. is "Consultant" while the entry level position in Singapore is "Associate". I started as "Consultant I" in their U.S. office and they've offered me a position of "Associate II" in Singapore. They are saying that it is actually a progression because I am moving from a "first-year analyst (consultant I) to a second-year analyst(Associate II) but I am concerned because I think it might look like I am being demoted.
If I take this position as Associate in their Singapore office and get promoted next year, I will be still promoted to "Consultant", which is the same as my current title in their U.S. office. Of course, I understand that a title of "Consultant" in the U.S. and Asia are not considered as a same level. Also, I will be transferring to a different service department (e.g. Finance to Data Science). But, I still feel like it could be a negative factor on my resume when it comes to MBA admissions. Besides this job title issue, it seems like a good opportunity. Should I take this offer or does it look like I am being demoted within the same company? I've been trying to negotiate with my employer on this matter but it seems like the title issue is also closely bound up with client billing rate so i couldn't negotiate.
My major concerns are:
1. Does it sound like a demotion and the admission officers would think negatively about this title change?
2. If i get promoted to Consultant from Associate in their Singapore office next year, would it be still considered as "promotion" even through the title will be the same as my current title in the U.S.?
Thank you.
