This may sound dumb to some of you veterans, but I don't want to assume anything, even though it doesn't sound logical to me.
If for instance Yale SOM invited me to an interview (I'm assuming that most if not all schools have the same interview requirements as Yale)....
1. Do interviews need to be scheduled prior to the respective Round's
decision-by dates? So, your application is "complete" / "finished" for the respective Round, even if the interview isn't even scheduled until after the Round's application submission deadlines but before the decision-by date. If this is incorrect, then:
- Do they require that you complete your interview before the respective Round's deadline and not the Round's decision-by date? Otherwise, your application is not deemed as "complete". But, this doesn't make sense if you submit your application on the very last day it's due for the Round... (e.g. submitted on the date of the Round 3 deadline). They also explicitly state that interviews are requested only after the application is submitted, so this can't be it...
- Will they accept you contingent on an interview that needs to be made at a later, hard deadline? For example, will they accept a candidate in Round 1 w/o an interview and require that the individual schedules an interview, say, sometime in 2016 even after Round 2 or 3 deadlines? This doesn't make sense to me since I'd think that an interview is required by Yale to make a decision for Round 1, to weed out candidates whose personalities are
seen to not mesh well with Yale's students, staff, and culture. And, they'd probably just wait-list you at best as a rule, no matter how good you look on paper. BUT, if this actually is the case, then you can get accepted first then do the interview, in which the interview would have no bearing on their decision, short of you not eventually completing the interview or bombing the interview (e.g. showing up miserably drunk).
2. I'd assume that Yale accommodates those who live nowhere near Yale's SOM campus. That is, alums, Yale's regional staff, or third party in your area would interview candidates, instead of requiring that candidates fly in to Yale for an in-person interview every time they send out an interview request. Or, perhaps they offer video interviews for all or only to those who are too far away or medically necessitate such an accommodation (?).
Thanks in advance!
