Hi, I recently got a conditional admit from Lakehead University, Canada.
Although GMAT/GRE are waived off at various universities, they still need a > GMAT 500 score to confirm my offer.
How do I start?
I know I should give a mock but would like a basic understanding of the questions before giving a mock. ( something like 4-5 hour prep )

You could work through some questions on this site, or through a few questions from one of the official guides. If you're looking for more information about what you could or should be doing, you could take a look at this post.

The Average Score on the Official GMAT hovers around 550 most years, so a requirement of 500 or higher shouldn't be too much of a concern (and it's worth noting that you do NOT need to correctly answer any of the questions that you think are too hard or too weird to achieve that type of Score). That having been said, many GMATers spend 3 months (or more) of consistent study time before they hit their 'peak' scores, so if you have no more than 1 month to study, then there will almost certainly be a limit to how much you will be able to hone your overall Test-taking skills.
I agree that taking a little time to learn about the basic question types of the GMAT would be a good idea, if your timeframe is going to be this limited, then you should not wait too long to take that initial practice CAT/mock. You can access 2 for free at www.mba.com (and they come with some additional practice materials). That score will give us a good sense of your natural strengths and weaknesses and will help provide a basis for comparison as you continue to study. A FULL CAT takes about 3.5 hours to complete, so make sure that you've set aside enough time to take it in one sitting. Once you have that Score, you should report back here (or you can feel free to PM me directly) and we can discuss the results and come up with a study plan.
