One more tidbit on the Turbo vs. Fin1 debate. This from an email MMM's just received from the associate director:

"Finally, Turbo Fin vs. Finance I & II? We recommend Turbo Finance for those who have had past Finance experience or classes, and Finance I & II for the rest. Feedback from MMM students informs that those who are interested in a career in Finance benefit from taking both Finance I & II, as that choice provides a deeper, more deliberate coverage of the material."

At this point, at least for me, the advice seems to be pretty unanimous in favor of Fin 1, and I think I'm going to go in that direction.

Steel/River:
Have people without an Accounting Background tried waiving 430 by taking the exam? I am thinking about doing this not just for the extra elective but this way I can take Finance I, Strategy and Marketing in the first quarter. Thanks.

Also, speaking about Finance and Turbo Finance, I am curious if anyone is leaning towards taking Accounting For Manufacturing Mngt (ACCT-439-0).

"Accounting For Manufacturing Mngt (ACCT-439-0)
1.00 Credit

Description:
For MMM students. This comprehensive, fast-paced introduction to financial and management accounting devotes 25 percent to financial accounting, including cash flows and financial statement analysis, and 75 percent to managerial accounting issues such as cost management performance measures and activity-based manufacturing. See ACCT-430 and ACCT-431 for more details."

Based on all the inputs, I am leaning towards taking Finance I and II but was wondering if I could go the Turbo Route with Accounting instead [No previous accounting experience].

If you dont have an accounting background waiving is going to be very very tough. Accounting has the strictest waiver requirements, it also is something you will want to understand very well. Many people dont take many accounting classes so I think it is one place you really want to know the basics because you may not go beyond that class.

As far as I understand, this is not the case. We can take turbo while enrolled in 433. They offer 434 tutorials in case someone needs a refresher for finance stuff.

When do we find out whether our waivers have gone through?

Since this will impact my core course selection, I'm hoping we find out soon.

From the Waiver Results page on the admitted student website:

Waiver Results
The outcome of your request for waivers will be available online when you arrive on campus. This will leave a week to prepare for waiver exam(s) if you receive a "no waiver" or "partial waiver" from the department. Faculty advisers will be available to discuss waiver outcomes during the latter half of Pre-Term.

For some core courses, students denied a waiver and hoping to take an advanced course in the department may sit for a waiver examination during new student orientation in September. Students who pass the waiver exam are entitled to take any Kellogg elective in the department (based on availability). For some courses, preference is given to second-year students. The exam, like a final exam, will cover the topics and readings described on the course description form. Information about waiver exams can be found in the Waiver Procedures Information document. Thanks jb!

I'm confused what to choose as my core course requirement - I was thinking of opting for marketing and hopefully after getting waivers for fin 1 and decs 433, taking fin 2. If I don't get the waiver for fin 1, then i'll take turbo instead. So, what to do right now? What's going to be easier to get (less bid points) - marketing or turbo finance - during add/drop in September?

What you planning on doing jb?

Don't even worry about it until you get on campus. Add/Drop is during the second week of CIM - you'll have plenty of time to compare notes with folks on campus hehe.

If you have enough time to worry about it now - relax, find a beach, drink a margarita :)

That being said - I'll give my take:

Courses cost 0 points during add/drop (its first come first served).... its only about are there spots in the class. This should generally not be a problem for core classes - only thing in demand is the particular teacher. That's why I'd choose marketing for your waiver. Its the only class where teacher matters among the core options.

Thus you give yourself the most opportunities for success - get Hennessy or Grayson during random selection and the possibility to switch into one during add/drop if possible if you get.

Note: actually upon second check - the 3rd great intro MKTG professor (Chernev) is back - so that reduces this concept. But you might have a preference if you've met one before, or know you want to take a class with one of the three for 0 points.

Also, if you waive Fin I, I'm pretty sure you can get auto-enrolled into Fin II before Add/Drop.

Plus, I don't think Turbo Fin totally filled last year anyway - so very little Add/Drop risk if you don't waive Fin I and want to take Turbo if you don't.

Marketing has now been selected. Time to go drink some margaritas.

I'm guessing most of you have already submitted your class preference for the fall. But in case you're like me and want to take finance but are still trying to decide between Finance 1 and Turbo, I found a syllabus for each class:

Finance I: https://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/fac ... busf08.pdf (Kuhnen)

Turbo: https://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/fac ... lF2008.pdf (Eberly)

Not that this helps, haha. I'm still undecided.

If you take Fin 1 try to get in Annette Vissing Jorgensen's class, she is a really good prof...definitely the one to take in the fall. The professor for Fin 2 is Phillip Braun, who has been at Booth for years now and used to teach at Kellogg, he is extremely highly regarded I guess and when he was at Kellogg he actually won Prof. of the Year. Maybe some of the Booth guys have taken classes with him and might know more about him.

I second Annette - I sat next to river in this class and thought she was very good.

Her tests are also very fair (not to say very easy - but definitely tests the material).

Do any of you guys know anything about HEMA-441? Is it a really popular elective, lots of points? It seems the Professor is simply amazing at least looking at his background.

The reason I ask is that if I can get 2 waivers and take an elective this fall, there would probably be no more interesting class than Health Policy right during the National Healthcare debate. Any thoughts would be great!!

jb32 its not a very popular class...its probably very specific for who wants to take it. If you arent going into healthcare for a career its probably a waste of a class. Goes for no points there are still plenty of seats (42) and the prof gets solid scores so its probably a great class if you want to work in the HC field. You can't bid on fall classes since bidding is already over you basically just put in for open seats in classes that aren't full.

I'll echo river's comments. HEMA-441 looks like an interesting class and it gets really good TCE reviews, but it is far from popular. For the fall quarter it got a whopping 7 bids for 50 spaces. I'm a HEMA major and did not bid for it, partly because it is on Wednesday night and conflicts with Kraemer's Managerial Leadership class (1,275 points versus 1 point for HEMA-441). The course is also planned for the winter quarter, so I wouldn't break my back to try to get in it for the fall. I intend to take it in the winter.
