Advantages of a Columbia EMBA - A View in 2016
When it comes to comparing the world’s top executive MBA (EMBA) programs, what really sets the Columbia EMBA apart?
Schedule and Location Flexibility. Columbia University offers an exceptionally wide array of EMBA programs and schedules, allowing students to minimize their time away from work and maximize the advantages reaped from the program. The Columbia EMBA is grouped into three main programs: EMBA New York, EMBA Americas, and EMBA Global.
Columbia’s EMBA New York takes place at the home campus in New York City. EMBA New York students choose from two schedules: the Friday/Saturday schedule or the Saturday schedule. The Friday/Saturday schedule meets over the course of 20 months beginning in August. This schedule requires company sponsorship, which may be an important factor to consider for many applicants. The Saturday schedule meets over the course of 24 months, every Saturday beginning in May, and does not require company sponsorship. The average accepted applicant to both of these schedules has approximately 10 years of work experience.
The EMBA Americas program was created with the understanding that some of the most talented and motivated professionals may not be located in an area that allows for weekly travel to New York City. Under EMBA Americas, students spend their first year meeting in global locations such as Silicon Valley, Toronto and Latin America to complete the core curriculum during weeklong sessions. During the second year, students choose from a collection of global electives, weekend electives and seminars to top off the 20-month program.
Finally, the Columbia’s EMBA Global program alternates between two different locations, during which students earn up to two MBA degrees – either from Columbia and the University of Hong Kong, or Columbia and London Business School.
With all programs, core curriculum is the focus of the first year, with elective education becoming the focus of the second year. Students have access to the same prestigious curriculum, faculty, alumni pool and alumni privileges, regardless of which schedule is chosen.
The Cluster System. Community building through the Cluster System has been one of Columbia’s great achievements in fostering student life and camaraderie. In the beginning of year one, all EMBA students are organized into “clusters” of 30 to 70 students who progress through the first year together. Clusters make the Columbia experience unique because they bring together students from all around the world, with diverse cultures, beliefs and experiences, and mesh them all into one group. Students learn to challenge ideas, negotiate, collaborate, and build lasting relationships that will benefit them during and after their MBA.
Outstanding Students and Alumni Network. Finally, all of our candidates who have attended the Columbia EMBA program have raved about how wonderful it is – from the talented peers to the thought-provoking classwork. It is, after all, Columbia University! They find their post-MBA years equally wonderful, given the amazing alumni network they inherit, which includes not only the alumni from the business school, but also from Columbia’s world-class undergraduate college, law school and medical programs.
