Hello, I am not a native English speaker. I am confused about this adverb/adjective concept.
In:
(1) Max's grandmother is his supposed Irish ancestor.
(2) Max's grandmother is his supposedly Irish ancestor.
I know that (2) is the correct sentence because 'supposedly' is an adverb that will modify Irish, unlike the adjective 'supposed' which will modify ancestor.
However, HOW DO I KNOW that 'supposed' is an adjective and not an adverb and the same for 'supposedly'?
Many will say that the
'-ly' at the end conveys it.
However, someone could say: 'Amit writes well' and 'well' is an adverb and DOES NOT have the '-ly'.
