Advice needed for DI.

Question

Ive scored 615-81/85/76 on the GMAT FE which I took on Oct 30th. My prep time period was roughly 2 months from Aug to Oct. Unfortunately I bombed the DI section and the Quant arithmetic. I plan to re-attempt the exam a month later and would appreciate advice on the course of action that I should take. Ive attached the score screenshots if anyone is interested.

I recommend focusing on Data Sufficiency questions from official materials and prioritizing completion of all official Data Insights questions before your next attempt. All the best.

DI is really several different animals - I would recommend approaching each separately to make it more manageable and spend a few days on DS, a few on TAP, on MSR, and so on. The most important part on ANY section of the GMAT is time management forcing yourself to guess and move on if you are falling behind. Better to do it as you are in the middle of the test rather than at the end.

Including what you've done/used for DI could be helpful. If, for example, you've run out of official DI questions from the Official-Guide 2024, you could check out the 2024 DI Review guide if you're looking for more. Working with a study buddy who is strong on DI and needs help with Verbal could also be a good fit.

Agreeing with all the responses posted here since I definitely did not practice for the DI section as much as I did for the Quant and the Verbal section as I was under the impression that strong Quant and Verbal would naturally translate to DI. But I guess I overestimated my preparedness for the DI section.

Hi Qdiz,

When students struggle with DI questions, the first thing I always ask is whether they have fully completed their quant and verbal prep. Not doing so can really affect how well you handle DI questions, as many of those questions involve quantitative and verbal concepts. So, would you say you are in that boat?

In addition, one way to improve each individual DI question type is to engage in topical practice. Doing so lets you pinpoint your weak areas in JUST ONE question type. For example, when practicing TPA questions, perhaps you see a pattern that you struggle with 3-part ratios or weighted averages. If you can find those micro weaknesses, you can fix them in real-time and thus improve your accuracy in DI questions..

Lastly, when working on DI questions, for the time being, make sure to practice them untimed so you can focus on JUST accuracy. As you become more familiar with these question types and get more accurate, better timing will follow.
