Hi everyone,
I'm having a hard time figuring out when I should give my notice to my current employer - hopefully you all can help me out! Here are the key details of the situation:
- I got my recommendation letters from my previous employer, so no one here knows that I'm leaving yet.
- My full-time one-year program starts on May 23rd.
- I'd like my last day to be April 26th.
- Last week, I found out that I'm receiving a sizable (9%) merit-based salary increase effective April 1st.
- My first payday (after the increase is in effect) is April 5th.
I'm trying to balance three things:
(1) I would strongly prefer to receive my new salary during my final month - both for the additional compensation and for future salary negotiations.
(2) I don't want there to be too much (awkward) time between when I give notice and when I leave.
(3) I want to be courteous and give my employer enough lead time (note, I am an individual contributor).
Right now, I'm leaning towards giving my notice on Friday, April 5th. It ensures points (1) and (2) happen, and gives my employer 3 weeks notice. What do you guys think, is that enough lead time?
Thanks!
OA
