Hi Harsh, which preparations resources have you been using so far?

For you to achieve your target score, V20 needs to go up to at least V35. Basically you're looking at almost a 200 point jump from your current score.

See here how our student Soumya achieved a 200 point jump in her GMAT score. While this shows that achieving such jump is doable, however, it does not come easy.

An almost maniacal effort and single minded determination over the next few months, would be the only way for you to achieve your target. Remember that time just flies by.

Hi EducationAisle,

Thanks for the advice.

I have not been using any preparation resource as of now.
I gave the mock before starting my presentation as I read many GMAT preparation blogs where it was written to give a mock first to get an idea about the weak areas.

I agree that I need to work really hard to get my desired score.
So, currently I am also going through some of the free resources I got access to while creating account on GC to which which one will be a good fit for me.

Thanks,
Harsh

Yeah..that's an issue I have had, with this blanket recommendation of giving a GMAT mock test completely cold!

Hi Harsh,

To start, a 530 is a solid initial CAT Score (the average Score on the Official GMAT hovers around 550 most years). You've also given yourself plenty of 'lead time' before you plan to take the GMAT - which is good. Depending on your Score Goal, you'll still need a certain amount of 'efficiency' with your studies going forward though.

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on your timeline and your goals:

1) What study materials do you currently have?
2) What is your overall goal score?
3) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
4) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

Hi Rich,

Thanks for the reply.

Currently, I only have the GMAT Official Guide.
My goal score is 720+. I think I can take quant to 49-50 with some practice. So, Verbal is what is worrying me.
I will be applying to Business Schools next year, around September.
As for which Schools, I haven't decided that yet.
Please guide.

Thanks,
Harsh

While reviewing I found that most of my mistakes in Verbal were in Critical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension.
In Quant, I did mistakes in Data Sufficiency.

Please advice on how I should proceed with my preparation.

The areas of concern you mentioned are common pitfalls for many testtakers. Consider "Data Sufficiency". This is an unusual form of testing which is nornally not encountered in testtakers' daily activities or during their previous studies. So, doing well in this subject will mean that a testtaker should first become familliar with the question types and secondly, how to quickly answer the question (without actually solving the question).

Similarly, "Reading Comprehension" and "Critical Reasoning" are special subjects. RC is not your normal reading. It is a special type of reading that needs to be done in limited time to answer special question types. In CR too, one must become familiar with the question types.

There are many resources available out there. However, the most important in my view, is constant practice. By constantly practcing and analyzing, a testtaker can achieve good scores on these sections. GL!

Hi Harsh,

I’m glad you reached out and I’m happy to help. Regarding how to move forward with your prep, you’ll need to focus on improving your verbal skills while also improving a bit in quant. A great way to improve both your verbal and quant skills is to follow a linear and structured study plan that allows you to learn each GMAT quant and verbal topic individually, and then practice each topic until you’ve gained mastery. Certainly, if you want more detailed advice on how to improve your quant and verbal skills, feel free to reach out.

Regarding resources, in addition to seeking advice in this thread, take a look at the GMAT Club reviews for the best quant and verbal courses, and also read through some GMAT success stories to see what materials have worked well for other test-takers.

Hi Harsh,

Many GMATers spend 3 months (or more) of consistent study time before they hit their 'peak' scores, although raising a 530 to the point that you can consistently score 720+ might require more time than that. Thankfully, the GMAT is a consistent, predictable Exam, so you CAN train to score at a higher level.

1) What study materials do you currently have access to?
2) Going forward, how many hours do you think you can consistently study each week?
