when we comprehend the meaning of the sentence, we notice that there are lot errors :modifier/pronoun/meaning issues.
lets correct it with mechanical approach.
sentence ends with "to do so" .its correct.
"to do it" is incorrect as we cant use pronoun to denote an action.
So, B and D are out straight away.
if you want to see the best misuse of modifier, go through option E .
in option C, "leaving" is not a verb so it has been used incorrectly.

It seems both action are taking place simultaneously which is non-sensical.

A is grammatically and stylistically acceptable. In answers B and D, it is not entirely clear what the final “it” refers to. Answer C implies that MacTaggart left the Pentagon from his connections, which does not make sense, and in E it is unclear from “could have done so” whether this refers to profiting or refusing to profit.
