After the Civil War, Harriet Tubman, herself an escaped slave, continued her efforts in behalf of former slaves, helping to educate freedmen, supporting children, and she was assisting impoverished old people. (A) she was assisting impoverished old people (B) impoverished old people were assisted (C) to assist impoverished old people (D) assisting impoverished old people (E) also in assisting impoverished old people
Oa is
d
Please explain the difference between E and D. I feel E is right.

"also in" in option E is redundant. Try substituting both the options D and E in the sentence, do you any improvement in sentence by using E ? Grammatically E is correct, but is wordy. Without using "also in", the sentence can be corrected.
I agree with Bigoyal, 'D' is the right option because: a) 'also' is redundant in 'E' and b) these are activities that Harriet Tubman did, i.e. helping to educate freedmen supporting children and assisting impoverished old people. So, in fact, even 'in' in 'E' is not required..
