D. The first is an inference; the second is a conclusion.

Conclusion is based on this inference.

So either D or B

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

Air bags have become a staple for every new car on the market. The fast rate at which they were incorporated into the new models of most manufacturers attests to the rapidity at which their significance was perceived. A new Japanese car manufacturer has concluded that if he wishes his cars to be considered safe, he must also incorporate air bags in the vehicles he plans to put on the market.

In the argument given, the two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

A. The first is an assumption; the second is the conclusion of the argument.

Incorrect.

This is a Boldface Type question, in which you are required to define the role of the two boldface sections in the argument. Read the argument and break it down using indicative words:

  • The first boldface portion, or sentence 1, is a premise because it gives us factual information.
  • Sentence 2 is also a premise because it is a piece of information not up for discussion, a given.
  • Sentence 3, which is the second boldface portion, has the obvious conclusion word concluded, so it is the conclusion.

The first boldface part is not an assumption - it's a fact, a premise. You can immediately eliminate answer choices that incorrectly define the first boldface part; do not waste time reading the rest.

B. Both the first and the second are the conclusions of the argument.

Incorrect.

The first boldface part is not a conclusion - it's a fact, a premise. You can immediately eliminate answer choices that incorrectly define the first boldface part; do not waste time reading the rest.

C. The first is a piece of evidence; the second is a judgement which is contrary to that piece of evidence.

Incorrect.

While this answer choice defines the first boldface part correctly, it defines the second incorrectly. The second boldfaced piece tells us that a Japanese car manufacturer has decided to follow the trend described in the first premise. His judgement, or conclusion, cannot therefore be considered contrary to the evidence in the first premise.

D. The first is an inference; the second is a conclusion.

Incorrect.

The first boldface part is not an inference, which is just another word for conclusion - it's a fact, a premise. You can immediately eliminate answer choices that incorrectly define the first boldface part; do not waste time reading the rest.

E. The first is a piece of information; the second is the conclusion of the argument.

The first boldface part is indeed a fact or a piece of information, i.e., a premise, and the second is the conclusion of the argument.

I have few doubts in this 1. Is the first BF a inference, like he is is telling they have become a staple . 2. 2nd BF is conclusion of japanese manufacturer , not the author. SO what is the conclusion of argument.

A new Japanese car manufacturer has concluded that if he wishes his cars to be considered safe, he must also incorporate air bags in the vehicles he plans to put on the market.

In the argument given, the two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

The argument says air bags are now standard in new cars and were quickly adopted because manufacturers recognized their importance. From this, the Japanese manufacturer concludes that his cars must also include air bags if they are to be considered safe. The first boldface is supporting information; the second boldface is the conclusion drawn from that information.

A. The first is an assumption; the second is the conclusion of the argument.

Wrong. The first boldface is stated directly as information, not merely assumed.

B. Both the first and the second are the conclusions of the argument.

Wrong. The first boldface supports the conclusion; it is not itself the conclusion.

C. The first is a piece of evidence; the second is a judgement which is contrary to that piece of evidence.

Wrong. The second boldface is not contrary to the first. It follows naturally from it.

D. The first is an inference; the second is a conclusion.

Wrong. The first boldface is better described as given information or evidence, not an inference drawn in the argument.

E. The first is a piece of information; the second is the conclusion of the argument.

Correct. The first boldface gives background information about air bags being standard in new cars. The second boldface states the manufacturer’s conclusion.

Hi bharathhr let me try to help No the statement is not an Inference, 2nd the authors main conclusion is not there. The author is simply observing a market trend, noting why that trend occurred, and then reporting a third party's conclusion as an example of that trend in action

Hope this helps

I have few doubts in this 1. Is the first BF a inference, like he is is telling they have become a staple . 2. 2nd BF is conclusion of japanese manufacturer , not the author. SO what is the conclusion of argument.
