Let A be Alice's budget, and B be Bob's budget.

Alice spent total of = A/2 + A/5
Bob spend total of = B/5 + B/12.5

Question is, what is A?

(1) => A/2 + B/5 = 600

1 Equation 2 unknowns. Insuff.

(2) A/5 + B/12.5 = 240

Again 1 equation 2 unknowns.

(1) + (2)
=>
A/2 + B/5 = 600
A/5 + B/12.5 = 240

They are the same equation

It is very similar to selecting E (statements combined are not sufficeint) when you see a quadratic equation as a quadratic equation x^2+2x+1 = 0 will have 2 SAME values and thus in this case you will mark A or B or C (statements combined are sufficient) or D but not E.

So, to summarize, whenever you encounter a system of linear equations or a quadratic equation, make sure to check whether you will be getting a unique value of a set of values.
