If you don't mind, I'll add another cause of anxiety early on during GMAT prep (one that isn't thought about as much but can have a tremendous impact).

Benchmarking and diagnostics from the beginning are critical to understanding the prep road ahead and to recognising progress during the early phases of study. Often, candidates don't assess or realise the true extend of their gaps and when they look for progress after a few weeks or a month of study, they feel very little. This can lead to both anxiety and a loss of motivation.

The suggested way to avoid that is to do an honest assessment of conceptual and other skills by undertaking diagnostics early on. It's also important to understand how the GMAT tests you -- so when you clear the conceptual hurdles, you recognise that you've only 1/2 way there. The hard part is developing the test taking skills to consistently perform well on medium and high difficulty questions.

I'd also chip in that the executive reasoning skills that GMAT forces you to develop (or fine-tune) are useful in many immediately upcoming situations including during the admissions process (Group Case Discussions), while you're at MBA school (in case studies and other analytic situations) and in your future career as you have to become better and better at making great executive decisions.

This is in direct contrast to the GRE which simply serves as an entrance hurdle but doesn't build skills that are applicable afterwards.
