I am not sure of the criteria to choose D to C. Can someone please explain?
the word period is there wheather we like it or not, so if we say 'for a period of more than a million years', than this sentence becomes awkward - it's better to say 'for more than a million years'. The same is true for A by the way, you can remove 'period' from there too.
However, if we have 'lasting' than period becomes a necessary word.
So the whole point of this excersise is to justify presence of 'period' in that sentence, isn't that wierd?
Any thoughts?
