Here realisation occured before movement of turtles....

Placed themselves ......indicate it is the the turtles that are placing themselves....

V+ing modifier wrongly used... makes the sentence a fragment...

Most of the answer choices distorts the meaning ( Suggesting that the turtles themselves moved to a diff location )...
However in (E) conveys the intended meaning and is gramatically correct ( USe of pronoun they for turtles )
Hence Answer will be (E)
