Hey just wanted to know if I could use process of elimination for Although.....but - I see the pattern in two sentences and wanted to know if this is a sound elimination strategy.

Yes, "But" is not needed since we already have the contrast word Although. Also, "but" is used to join two ICs. The sentence with "Although" is a dependent clause and hence joining DC and IC with a but is a no no.

Although an initial analysis of the rock samples that had been gathered by the Mars Pathfinder mission, revealing traces of water on the Martian surface and generating excited debate about the possibility of life on the planet, more recent evaluations have cast doubt on those speculations, suggesting that the Martian environment is too hostile to sustain life.

A. that had been gathered by the Mars Pathfinder mission, revealing traces of water on the Martian surface and generating excited debate about the possibility of life on the planet, more recent evaluations have cast doubt on those speculations, suggesting -- There is no verb for the noun rock samples in this option. This is just a long fragment.

B. gathered by the Mars Pathfinder mission revealed traces of water on the Martian surface and generated excited debate about the possibility of life on the planet, but more recent evaluations have cast doubt on those speculations and have suggested - Although and but together are not needed. "And generated" makes the clause a separate idea while we need an effect participle. Hence "Generating" becomes a better choice.

C. gathered by the Mars Pathfinder mission revealed traces of water on the Martian surface, generating excited debate about the possibility of life on the planet, more recent evaluations have cast doubt on those speculations, suggesting -- Correct Answer

D. that had been gathered by the Mars Pathfinder mission has revealed traces of water on the Martian surface and generated excited debate about the possibility of life on the planet, more recent evaluations have cast doubt on those speculations and suggested -- Rock Samples is a plural noun while has is a singular verb

E. gathered by the Mars Pathfinder mission has revealed traces of water on the Martian surface, generating excited debate about the possibility of life on the planet, but more recent evaluations have cast doubt on those speculations and have suggested -- Same error as in option D
