Although Norway is today a Lutheran nation and thus not much associated with saints and miracles, the legend of Sunniva survives there as a testament to earlier values. On the island of Selja, there remain ruins of a great Christian center. Churches dating back to the 900s and a large monastery from somewhat later are part of the Selja ruins. On the island, too, is a large cave, where the legend is mostly set.
Sunniva was the Christian daughter of Irish King Otto. She was pursued by a heathen Viking, who wanted her hand in marriage. The island became a site for pilgrimages and a major focus of Olav’s Christianization of Norway. Sunniva is now the patron saint of Western Norway and particularly of Bergen.
